From completion to recognition

How Digital Credentials Could Work

The process builds on the University's existing academic verification responsibilities while giving students a portable credential they can share.

A five-step credential process

  1. 1

    Certificate completed

The student satisfies all curriculum and institutional requirements for the certificate.

  2. 2

    Completion verified

The Registrar confirms the award against the University's authorized academic systems.

  3. 3

    Credential issued

An approved staff member selects the certificate and creates a unique credential record.

  4. 4

    Student notified

The student receives an email containing the badge, credential ID and verification link.

  5. 5

    Credential shared

The student adds the badge to LinkedIn or a personal website, where others can verify it.

Credential anatomy

What a verified credential contains

Each public record connects the shared badge to the recipient and the University-issued credential details.

Student notification

What the award email could look like

After issuance, the student receives the badge, credential ID and a direct link to the public verification record.

Privacy by design

Public verification vs. protected student information

The public page should disclose only the information approved for credential verification. Academic records remain in authorized University systems.

Public verification

Information shown to employers

  • Recipient name
  • Certificate name and credential type
  • Issue date
  • Credential ID and current status
  • Official program and verification links

Protected systems

Information kept private

  • Student WU ID
  • Transcript, grades and GPA
  • Course-level academic records
  • Student contact information
  • Internal Registrar notes and audit data

Production note: Final public fields and disclosure rules would require University privacy, legal and Registrar approval.

Registrar experience

Academic authority remains with the University

  • Verify completion in the official student record
  • Confirm the correct certificate and award date
  • Issue, revoke or correct a credential
  • Maintain an auditable issuance history

Student experience

A credential designed to travel

  • Receive the badge and verification link by email
  • Add the credential to LinkedIn
  • Display the badge on a portfolio or personal website
  • Give employers a direct verification source

What production would require

A live implementation would need authenticated staff access, a secure integration with authorized academic records, server-side credential storage, email delivery, privacy review, audit logging and processes for corrections or revocation.
